There’s something about an autumnal day out that makes me want to get creative with my scrapbooking! Our visit to the Trolleybus Museum for their Vintage Emergency Services Day was full of interesting little details, from the vintage buses and emergency vehicles to the old tickets and memorabilia. Although the weather was rainy, it gave the day such a cosy, nostalgic feel — and I knew I wanted to capture that atmosphere in my layouts.

As soon as I started pulling my supplies together from my ‘autumn’ box, I knew I wanted to move away from the brighter colours I might usually reach for and embrace those warm, muted autumn tones instead.
I used a combination of rusty orange, blush pink, cream, brown and burgundy, which reflected both the rainy weather and the vintage feel of the museum. I also incorporated a few pieces from the October Kit, which were perfect for bringing everything together without having to start completely from scratch.
The orange grid paper became a key feature across the pages, adding a pop of colour while still feeling quite retro. Layering it with cream papers, torn edges and cardstock helped soften the overall look and gave the layouts that lovely, well-loved vintage feel.
For the first layout, I wanted to document the little details that made the day memorable. Rather than simply adding photographs, I treated the page almost like a miniature pin board holding our entry tickets and bus tickets given on the day.
I layered the orange grid paper over a lined background, then added our photographs, vintage-style bus tickets and a few pieces of museum ephemera. The different paper layers helped create depth without making the page feel too busy.
I added the little red double-decker bus stickers from a very old sticker sheet to tie everything together and used small heart stickers from the kit to bring in a personal touch.
I also loved incorporating the museum leaflet alongside the scrapbooked elements. Mixing pieces of actual memorabilia with patterned paper and embellishments is one of my favourite ways to make a layout feel personal and meaningful.
I had so much to include I had to use two double page spreads as well as adding the leaflet from the museum as a flip and pocket. I didn’t mind doing this as I have so many pages left in my 2026 journal!
This time, I leaned further into the vintage aesthetic, using softly patterned papers, old-fashioned ticket designs, kraft cardstock and decorative stickers I wanted to use up. There’s something really satisfying about finding the perfect stickers to fit with your theme, as well as using them up!
I really enjoyed layering the tickets at different angles rather than lining everything up perfectly. It gives the page a collected-over-time feel, almost as though the pieces have been gathered from an old travel scrapbook.
The final part of the spread focused on the vehicles themselves. The museum’s vintage emergency services displays were such a big part of the day, so I wanted to give the photographs room to stand out. I used the back of the leaflet I had taped in, which became a handy pocket for some hidden journaling. Again its very satisfying when you can use ephemera from the event you are documenting, as well as giving you some hidden journaling and pocket space!
Making the weather part of the story
One thing I love about scrapbooking is that you don’t have to pretend every day was sunny and picture-perfect!
It rained during our visit, and the weather made the whole day feel very autumnal. Rather than seeing that as something to work around, I decided to reflect it in the colours and textures I chose.
The rusty orange, burgundy, cream and brown tones reminded me of autumn leaves, cosy afternoons and old photographs. The torn paper edges and layered textures added to that slightly weathered, nostalgic feeling, which suited the museum perfectly.
Although the layouts aren’t filled with obvious autumn leaves or pumpkins, I think the seasonal atmosphere still comes through. Sometimes it’s the colour palette and little design choices that make a page feel like a particular time of year.
